The 9 Best Vegan Bakeries (around the world)

Vegan cake is worth travelling for, wouldn’t you say?

Whether you’ve got a sweet tooth or you prefer a delicious organic country sourdough, there are now plenty of vegan bakeries across the globe to satisfy your cravings.

As BReD is a vegan bakery based in Whistler, we may be biased but, we believe there’s nothing quite like munching on a freshly baked cinnamon roll while enjoying our morning coffees.

In case you’re not lucky enough to be in the greatest vegan ski resort, then we’ve rounded up some of the best vegan bakeries around the world:

1. Vida Bakery in London, UK

BReD LOVES: Vida Bakery’s Vegan Vanilla Rainbow Cake Tub

Vida Bakery creates delicious free-from cakes that are suitable for vegans, allergy sufferers, coeliacs, and individuals with other dietary restrictions.

Co-founder Dani, who is coeliac and vegan, used to struggle to find sweet baked goods suitable for her requirements. So in 2014, she paired up with Vane to make their vegan bakery accessible to everyone!

Vida Bakery has a brick and mortar establishment in Brick Lane, East London. Moreover, they now offer nationwide delivery of their cakes in a tub.

2. Bernds Welt in Grabern, Austria

BReD LOVES: Bernds Welt’s Walnut & Cinnamon Bun with Rum & Raisins

The first certified vegan bakery in Austria, Bernds Welt creates mouth-watering Austrian baked goods, including soya & vanilla golatsche, striezel, and mohnstrudel (poppy seed strudel).

3. Sharon Artisan Bakery in Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam

BReD LOVES: Sharon’s Sourdough Ciabatta Sandwich with Kashew Vegan Cheese

A vegetarian bakery in Saigon, Sharon Artisan Bakery sells a variety of vegan sourdoughs and cakes.

We especially love their sourdough ciabatta sandwich because they serve it with Kashew, a sustainable cultured vegan cheese made from locally-grown cashew nuts!

Sharon Artisan Bakery works with local providers to source their ingredients and their sourdough bread is made using 100% natural fermentation methods.

4. Rogue Bread in Bay Area, California

BReD LOVES: Rogue Bread’s Salted Caramel Apple Kouign Amann

If you love pastry then you will ADORE this vegan bakery in California.

What’s the secret to their gorgeously flaky layers of golden pastry? Homemade vegan butter!

Rogue Bread is just getting started and currently sells their baked goods through pop-ups and in pastry boxes that can be bought from Academic Coffee Co.. But we have high hopes they will set up their own vegan bakery in the near future!

5. Loaf Sourdough Bakery in Utrecht, Netherlands

BReD LOVES: Loaf’s Multi-Seeded Sourdough Bread

Loaf is yet another female-led vegan bakery based in Utrecht serving delicious sourdough, cinnamon buns, and freshly-ground coffee. Other baked goods are sold seasonally, such as their plant-based stollen.

This bakery is unusual in that it also sells natural vegan wines, great if you fancy a tipple with your bread!

6. La Besnéta in Barcelona, Spain

BReD LOVES: La Besnéta’s Dulce de Leche

We love the fusion of Argentinian and Catalonian culture in this picturesque vegan bakery. La Besnéta offers a variety of plant-based cakes and pastries for takeaway.

Cheese Cake Dulce de leche Besnéta🤤

Dulce de leche is a Latin American confection traditionally made by slowly heating condensed milk but don’t worry, La Besnéta is entirely vegan!

7. Chimneys in Berlin, Germany

BReD LOVES: Chimney’s Pop Wave Chimney Cake

We couldn’t write a blog about vegan bakeries around the world without mentioning Berlin.

This cosmopolitan city is packed full of plant-based establishments (34 vegan-friendly bakeries listed on Happy Cow as of Jan 2021) but we chose Chimneys because of their unique Hungarian sweet bread, known as a chimney cake.

What’s a chimney cake? It’s a cylindrical cake hollowed out and filled with delicious ice cream.

If you’ve got a sweet tooth, then we suggest you head to Germany…sharpish!

8. Motzi Bread in Baltimore, USA

BReD LOVES: Motzi Bread’s Vegan Croissants

A vegan-friendly neighbourhood bakery with a conscience.

Motzi Bread is dedicated to making food accessible to all in their local area so they suggest prices for their products, and you pay what you can.

Oh, and they source all of their ingredients locally and sustainably.

9. BReD in Whistler, British Colombia

BReD LOVES: Organic Sourdough Pizza Dough

Of course, we saved the best until last 😉 If you do find yourself in Whistler, make sure you pop down to our 100% vegan bakery for a delicious Pecan Cinnamon Roll or a Slow-roasted Red Onion & Mushroom with Cashew Cheeze Flatbread. And if you can’t make it to BC, why not grab a copy of our cookbook and make our recipes at home?

Did we mention we’re the only plant-based bakery you can actually ski to?
