How to Create the Perfect Vegan Pizza (With BReD’s Sourdough Pizza Dough!)

“You can’t buy happiness, but you can buy sourdough pizza dough (from BReD)”

But what do you do when you realise you can no longer have meat and cheese on your pizza?

This was the very question my younger self had to answer after deciding to go vegan.

And so began my lifelong mission to create…

The perfect vegan pizza

Do you prefer a classic marinara or pizza loaded with toppings? Smothered in lashings of tomato sauce or simply drizzled with oil?

What about vegan cheese and plant-based meat alternatives? Are these toppings necessary to make the perfect vegan pizza?

According to the food critic Jeffrey Steingarten, meat and cheese don’t even play into it.

Great news for vegans!

In fact, Steingarten identifies only three essential elements to a perfect pizza:

  1. High-quality tomato sauce
  2. A dough with a healthy yeast content
  3. High cooking heat

Many Italians will agree that a simple marinara pizza speaks for itself.

But sometimes the combination of great pizza dough and mouthwatering vegan toppings can be hard to resist.

And, on some occasions, a good glug of olive oil or melted nut cheese eliminates the need to use a sauce.

With this in mind, let’s take a look at some of…

The best vegan pizza toppings

There’s so much more to vegan pizza than plastic-like cheese alternatives and a few limp vegetables!

We’re always making sourdough pizza over at BReD and we’re confident you’re going to love some of our winning vegan pizza topping combinations (bit of a mouthful that!)

Here are a few of our favourites:

Sweetcorn + Zucchini + Cashew Cheeze + Basil

It’s funny how sweetcorn seems to invoke the same reaction as pineapple when it comes to what should and shouldn’t go on pizza. But we love it here in Whistler!

What’s more, it matches perfectly with the delicately flavoured zucchini slices and rich and nutty cashew cheeze.

Drizzle it with garlic oil and scatter basil leaves on top to elevate this vegan pizza to the next level!

“Easy Cashew Cheeze Recipe

Add soaked cashews, nutritional yeast, water, lemon juice, garlic, salt and pepper into a blender and blend until smooth.”

Spicy Cauliflower + Marinated Olives + Pine Nuts + Fresh Herbs on BReD Sourdough Pizza Base

Paired with our sourdough pizza dough, these vegan toppings are bursting with flavour and warmth.

Spoon a good dollop of slightly sweet and chunky tomato sauce onto the base and spread it evenly across.

Coat cauliflower florets in a splash of oil and your favourite spices and distribute them across the pizza along with good quality marinated olives, pine nuts and fresh herbs, such as rosemary and thyme.

Drizzle your vegan pizza with chilli oil and voilà!

It’s ready to go in the oven.

Miyoko’s Mozzarella + Sahara Pizza Sauce + The Very Good Butcher’s Smokin’ Bangers

If you’re looking for a vegan pizza that’s just like the chorizo pizza you used to eat, then why not try these incredible vegan alternatives?

Miyoko’s Organic Fresh Vegan Mozzarella melts, bubbles, and browns just like the real thing and it tastes creamy and delicious on top of BReD’s sourdough pizza dough.

Made with Canadian-grown tomatoes, Sahara’s Italian vegan pizza sauce combines perfectly with The Very Good Butcher’s Smokin’ Bangers, which have a gorgeously smoky flavour inspired by chorizo sausages.

But what are all these ingredients without the perfect base?

In the same way that you wouldn’t build a house without strong foundations, you can’t build the perfect vegan pizza without the perfect base.

And I’m not talking about those pre-made pizza bases that have the texture of cardboard.

I’m talking about the mother of all pizza doughs…sourdough.

What’s so good about sourdough pizza dough?

Not only does sourdough pizza dough provide the ultimate tangy flavour, but it is also more beneficial for our gut health than yeasted pizza dough.

Why? Well, sourdough pizza dough has been slowly fermented using wild bacteria and yeast strains, which are conducive to a healthy gut microbiome!

What’s more, the wild yeasts are slower and consequently help preserve the dough for longer in the refrigerator. That means you can make a bigger batch of sourdough pizza dough and use it to make lots of vegan pizzas throughout the week – who doesn’t love more pizza?
